Bradley International Airport Becomes First in U.S. to Earn ‘Autism Double-Checked’ Certification – A Seamless Experience for Travelers with BermudAir

Posted by Jodi Daniels News

Great news for travelers, especially those on the autism spectrum! Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, has become the first airport in the United States to receive our prestigious ‘Autism Double-Checked’ certification. This certification marks a milestone in airport accessibility, ensuring that Bradley International is equipped to offer a more seamless, stress-free experience for travelers with autism and their families.

This accomplishment comes at an exciting time for the airport, as it also welcomes BermudAir, an Autism Double-Checked certified airline, to its roster. Starting this month, travelers flying from BDL to Bermuda will now enjoy not only the ease of an airport dedicated to autism-readiness, but also a flight experience provided by a carrier committed to serving the needs of all passengers, including those with autism.

Bradley International Airport: A Leader in Autism-Friendly Travel

Bradley International Airport’s new ‘Autism Double-Checked’ certification means that airport staff are specially trained to assist travelers on the autism spectrum, minimizing stress and helping make the airport journey a more comfortable experience. The certification is part of the airport’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that all passengers, regardless of their unique needs, can enjoy a smoother travel experience.

The training for airport staff focuses on understanding the sensory challenges, fears of the unknown, and unique needs that individuals with autism may face when navigating through an airport. This specialized training equips staff to assist travelers effectively and provides resources that can make their time at the airport more comfortable. With this certification, Bradley International Airport sets a new standard for how airports can accommodate travelers on the autism spectrum.

Alan Day, Founder and CEO of Autism Double-Checked, shared his excitement, saying, “Navigating an airport is one of the most challenging parts of a trip for individuals on the autism spectrum. With this certification, Bradley International is setting an example that other airports can follow.”

In addition to the certification, Bradley is hosting its fourth Autism Flies event in partnership with Autism Double-Checked and Breeze Airways. This event allows families with children on the autism spectrum to experience the full airport process, including check-in, TSA security, and boarding, creating a familiar environment for all attendees.

BermudAir Joins the Autism Double-Checked Movement

In a move that further enhances accessibility, BermudAir, an Autism Double-Checked certified airline, has officially launched its nonstop service between Bradley International Airport and Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA). The inaugural flight, which launched on April 3, 2025, adds even more value to the airport’s commitment to inclusivity. With this new route, travelers now have the added benefit of flying with an airline that shares Bradley International’s commitment to serving passengers with autism.

BermudAir’s certification ensures that the airline’s staff is trained to understand and accommodate the specific needs of passengers on the autism spectrum, helping ensure a comfortable and stress-free flight experience. Operating twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays, the airline’s Embraer 175 aircraft offers a convenient and comfortable way to travel between Connecticut and Bermuda, with the added benefit of U.S. Customs pre-clearance in Bermuda, simplifying the return process.

A Doubly Wonderful Travel Experience

With both Bradley International Airport and BermudAir now holding the Autism Double-Checked certification, travel for families and individuals on the autism spectrum has never been more seamless. From the moment you step into the airport to the time you arrive at your destination, you can be confident that you’ll receive the support and understanding you need to make your journey as stress-free as possible.

This partnership between Bradley International Airport and BermudAir exemplifies the growing movement to make travel more inclusive for all. We are excited to see more airports and airlines adopt these inclusive practices, paving the way for smoother, more accessible travel experiences for everyone.

At Autism Double-Checked, we believe that travel should be available to all, and Bradley International Airport and BermudAir are prime examples of what can be achieved when the travel industry embraces inclusivity.

About us

Both of ADC’s co-founders are career ‘travel people’ and both have special needs children: CEO Alan Day comes from the travel agency side and David Tait from aviation, where he was a co-founder of Virgin Atlantic Airways. In 2015, recognizing first-hand the industry’s lack of understanding of, and failure to cater to the special needs traveler, the two formed ADC and set about changing things.
